Diagnostic Medical Physicist ensures the quality of care in the use of radiation-producing sources and imaging equipment, while protecting patients and staff from radiation.
Performs required calibrations on radiation therapy equipment. Recommends and justifies new equipment and products for the Radiation Therapy department.
Conducts equipment performance reviews as needed and implements quality control procedures for imaging devices.
Recommends radiation safety procedures to areas using radiation.
Educates staff in radiation safety practices.
Performs performance measurements, reviews patient dose trends and monitors quality control measurements on diagnostic imaging systems located at any Via Christi Health Wichita Imaging location. Equipment tested includes X-ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Digital Mammography, Nuclear Medicine and PET. Testing is performed at frequencies determined by the Coordinator of Medical Physics and Radiation Safety Officer.
Serves as the Assistant Radiation Safety Officer and under direction of the Radiation Safety Officer manages the routine operation of the personnel dosimetry program and prepares monthly, quarterly and annual summary reports of personnel exposure trends.
Serves as a Qualified Medical Physicist (QMP) for practices and procedures required for ACR/MQSA accreditation and compliance with TJC and State of Kansas rules and regulations. This includes radiation shielding calculations, plan review and shielding surveys, review of imaging protocols with recommendations for improvement in image quality and potential reduction of patient exposure and recommendation / justification of new equipment and products for Radiations Safety and Diagnostic Imaging.
Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in Diagnostic Medical Physics and qualified to perform MQSA physics testing of Diagnostic Mammography imaging systems. If not certified, must be Board eligible by ABR in Diagnostic Medical Physics and trained in mammography imaging physics. If the required certifications/qualifications are not completed at the time of application, these must be completed within 3 years after being hired.
One or more of the following additional board certifications are desired; but not required. None of these board certifications may be substituted for the required credentials- American Board of Health Physics, comprehensive- American Board of Medical Physics in Medical Health Physics- American Board of Radiology in Nuclear Medical Physics- American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine: Physics and Instrumentation- American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine: Radiation Protection
Master's Level Degree
Required: Master of Science or DMP Required area of study: Physics, Chemistry, Medical Physics, Health Physics (with specific training in imaging physics) or Radiological Sciences
- Two years’ experience in Diagnostic Medical Physics or Completion of CAMPEP approved diagnostic physics residency or DMP program.
